Anyone else hate how there is no consistency when it comes to college writing?
Question by : Anyone else hate how there is no consistency when it comes to college writing?
I’ve been in college for a few years and one of my biggest pet peeves is the lack of consistency when it comes to grading papers and expectations. One professor will expect you to write in one specific writing style because “it’s important”, then the next tells you to learn a whole new one. And even at that the rules of the different writing styles changes so much that the professors don’t even know what’s up. I’ve had numerous occasions where I got marked down for doing something THE WAY THE LATEST GUIDELINES SAY TO and I had to go to the prof and show them where in the manual it says to do it that way! They grade you on adherance to the guidelines when half the time they don’t even know what the guidelines are!
Plus you get professors who tell you that your paper must be in a specific style, then tell you that you put too much work into the paper when all you did was follow the guidelines!!!
Seriously, enough with all this APA, MLA, Turabian BS, lets standardize it already!
And don’t even get me started about professor errors. We get marked down for the littleist errors, but they can make multiple errors on worksheets and in the syllabus and it’s ok?
How is it that I’m expected to be perfect when they make numerous mistakes themselves?

You do want the A right?
So yeah, you need to be perfect –or VERY close.
They get to make the rules because they have the degree’s. It’s unfair but its also a lesson in dealing with multiple demands.
