It depends on the citation you’re . Basically, any is ok if you’re consistent (and your teacher/professor hasn’t TOLD you which style or citation system he/she prefers).

If you’re just writing about a book or novel you’ve in class, you can just put the page in parentheses (say, if you’re all reading The Diary of Anne Frank, you can just put the page number). If you’re using a variety of sources, and you have a bibliography, you can use the author-page system, such as (Smith 43). If there’s more one Smith, use the guy’s first initial. If he wrote more one thing, use the book (or whatever) title, too. If you’re using footnotes/endnotes, you don’t put in-text except the footnote reference number, and put the page cite in the footnote/endnote.
